In this book Matthew and Janelle seek to reframe what it is to be an ADHDer and to broaden people’s understanding of ADHD to include a more wholistic sense of the person and their brain.
The word ‘delightful’ was chosen deliberately to turn on its head the conventional approach of understanding ADHD only as a list of disorders and dysfunctions and to highlight that ADHD includes many admirable capacities that other brains don’t tend to have.
That said, the authors acknowledge that many aspects of the ADHD brain, when it has to keep up with the mainly neurotypical demands and expectations of living a modern life, are far from delightful.

Kipi happens to be a woman but many of the things she experiences are common to ADHDers of all genders.
Kipi is an amalgamation (a ‘hodge-podge,’ as Matthew likes to say) of many, many ADHDers - male and female, child, teen and adult, diagnosed and undiagnosed, medicated and unmedicated.

The hero of our story is Kipi Comelately, a woman in her middle years who is creative, fun and kind and, in spite of her best efforts, finding it incredibly difficult to manage her life. With the help of a friend, Kipi starts to wonder whether she is an ADHDer.
Kipi seeks a diagnosis, treatment and support and in the process begins to make sense of a painful childhood that has continued to impact her throughout her life. She confronts the shame she has silently carried her whole life and begins to see herself and the path she has trodden with new understanding about how her brain works, the challenges it creates for her as well as some quite remarkable capacities she possesses but has never recognised before. And in the process Kipi begins to appreciate herself and what she brings to the world in a way that she had, until this point, believed was possible.

No. A Delightful Human Difference is not about fixing people. It is about understanding ADHD more deeply, recognising the strengths and challenges it can bring, the pain that many ADHDers are carrying, and exploring what becomes possible when we begin to replace judgement with greater understanding.

Rather than focusing primarily on symptoms, strategies or clinical information, A Delightful Human Difference explores the human experience of ADHD through illustrations, stories and reflection. It aims to inform but also to create the beginning of a process of self-discovery and even healing.

An e-book is a digital version of a book that, in this case, can be read on a computer or tablet (because it is illustration-heavy, this book is not suitable for phones or e-readers).
An e-book contains the same content as a printed book but is delivered electronically and almost immediately. It reduces the unwanted environmental impacts of printing on paper and then shipping a physical book, and it allows you to carry it with you effortlessly.
